Tesla Closes Main Showroom in Beijing
US electric vehicle maker Tesla has closed its main showroom in the Chinese capital Beijing. This has been confirmed by anonymous sources to the news agencies Reuters and Bloomberg.
Tesla has several showrooms in Beijing, but the one that closed last month was the first to open in the country in 2013. China is the world’s largest car market; about a quarter of cars sold are electric.
According to Reuters, Tesla has some 200 stores in China where models are displayed and where test drives can be recorded. However, the car manufacturer mainly sells its vehicles directly via the internet.
A week ago, Tesla announced that it had to lower prices in China due to fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers of electric cars, such as BYD. Billionaire Elon Musk’s American company has a factory in Shanghai.
