Biden: US Must Take the Lead in Tackling Climate Change
The United States must play a leading role in tackling the climate crisis worldwide.
So said US President Joe Biden Wednesday shortly before he began signing several decrees on climate change measures, such as cutting fossil fuel subsidies.
“Just as we need a unified national response to Covid-19, we urgently need a unified national response to the climate crisis, because the climate crisis is here,” Biden said in a White House speech.
He said that the US cannot face the challenge of tackling climate change alone, but it must be done in partnership with other countries.
“I think we have already waited too long to take action against the climate crisis. We cannot wait any longer. We see it with our own eyes; we feel it.”
One of Biden’s first acts as president was the re-signing of the Paris climate agreement. Under his predecessor Donald Trump, the United States had left the deal. The Biden government wants to hold an international climate summit on Earth Day (April 22).
