Brazil Reports Record Number of Corona Deaths Again
Brazil reported a record number of corona deaths in one day on Wednesday for the second consecutive day. This was also the case last week.
The Brazilian Ministry of Health reported on Wednesday that as many as 2,286 people in South American have died from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.
On Tuesday, a record number of 1972 deaths was reported in 24 hours. In addition to mortality rates, infection rates are also sky-high in Brazil. Just under 80,000 new infections were reported on Wednesday. The day before, there were more than 70,000.
The pan-American health organization (PAHO) on Wednesday expressed great concern about the course of the corona epidemic in Brazil. “The situation is a sobering reminder of the danger of a resurgence of the virus,” said PAHO Director Carissa Etienne. The number of infections is increasing in almost every Brazilian state, she reported.
The corona epidemic is currently straining the Brazilian healthcare system to its limits. In the country’s 15 largest cities, 90 percent of all intensive care beds are occupied. According to the Fiocruz research institute in Rio de Janeiro, a total collapse of the health care system is threatening in many places in the country.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who has always downplayed the severity of the coronavirus and pandemic so far, responded last week to record deaths by telling Brazilians to “stop whining”.
Brazil has the third-highest number of corona infections, with more than 11 million cases. The death toll, at least 268,370 in total, is the second-highest in the world.
