France Fears Russian Attack on Moldova and Georgia
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian fears that Russia will soon invade Moldova and Georgia. Just like Ukraine, these are two other former states from the Soviet Union.
In both countries, Russian military personnel are present in renegade, pro-Russian regions, just as in Ukraine’s Donbas region before the invasion there.
Russian soldiers are stationed in Moldavian Transnistria and in Georgia’s Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Russia invaded that country in 2008 after Georgia launched its attack on the separatists in Ossetia.
Le Drian thinks Vladimir Putin’s goal in Ukraine is to annex the country fully. “Putin wants to erase Ukraine from the world map. This is a full-blown war.” The British also think that Russia wants to occupy Ukraine.
Russia claims it is engaged in a military mission against the Ukrainian army and the incumbent government.
