International Research: World Failed to Tackle Corona Crisis

International researchers have made a devastating judgment on how the world was handling the corona pandemic.

The virus outbreak in China could turn into a “catastrophic crisis” for mankind through a “toxic cocktail” of factors, the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response (IPPPR) concluded.

Experts describe the corona crisis as the “Chernobyl moment” of the 21st century, a reference to the 1986 nuclear disaster in Ukraine. They say scientists have been calling for years to take measures to protect humanity from a pandemic. Not enough would have been done with that.

Member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) asked for the IPPPR investigation about a year ago. That panel includes political heavyweights such as former Prime Minister Helen Clark of New Zealand and Nobel Prize winner Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the former leader of Liberia.

The researchers’ conclusions are clear. According to the panel, institutions have failed to protect civilians against a pandemic that resulted in more than 3 million deaths. If reforms are not implemented, it will not be possible to prevent such a health crisis in the future.
