Jury Finds White Ex-Cop Guilty of Dead Black George Floyd
White ex-cop Derek Chauvin is guilty of the death of black George Floyd. A jury has reached that verdict in the trial of Chauvin in the American city of Minneapolis (Minnesota).
Chauvin was on trial on three charges, from murder to less severe manslaughter. He was found guilty of all three.
African American Floyd was violently arrested in Minneapolis in May last year. Chauvin pressed his knee to Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes, who then died. The video images went around the world.
The jury reached the verdict after more than nine hours of deliberations. The twelve jurors, all civilians, had been isolated from the outside world since Monday. They considered the question of guilt after the closing arguments of the prosecution and defence.
American media talk about a historic lawsuit. Floyd’s controversial death sometimes sparked fierce protests against police brutality and racism in the United States and abroad.
