Kyiv: Relatively Quiet Night
The Ukrainian capital Kyiv was not fired on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. However, fighting is still ongoing on the outskirts of the city, according to Deputy Mayor Mikola Povoroznik.
It was, therefore, a relatively quiet night, he said. On Tuesday, Russia announced that it would put the offensive in northern Ukraine on the back burner.
The announcement came on the day of negotiations in Istanbul between Ukraine and Russia to end the war. Both parties expressed themselves positively after the first round of talks. However, it is unclear when the next round will be.
In southeastern Ukraine, local pro-Russian authorities say Ukrainian armed forces shelled a residential area in the city of Donetsk with artillery. A few apartment buildings were hit, and one was killed. Four people were injured, the leadership of the ‘People’s Republic’ of Donetsk reported.
Donetsk has been in the hands of pro-Russian separatists since 2014. However, shortly before the Russian attack on Ukraine, the Kremlin recognized the province of Donetsk and the neighbouring province of Luhansk as independent states.
