Nearly 2 Million Coronavirus Infections in Brazil

Nearly 2 Million Coronavirus Infections in Brazil

In Brazil, the number of known corona infections is approaching 2 million. Nearly 40,000 new virus cases were recorded in the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health reported.

As a result, the counter now stands at over 1.9 million infections.

Brazil is among the countries most affected by the pandemic. Only the US (over 3.4 million) has reported more infections.

In total, more than 75,000 people died of the virus in the South American country. Brazil is thus responsible for roughly half of all 151,000 corona deaths in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Earlier on Wednesday, it was announced that Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has again tested positive for the coronavirus. He wants to be tested yet in a few days, CNN Brasil reported and is in isolation because he also tested positive for the virus earlier this month.

Bolsonaro has previously described the virus as a “flu” and strongly opposed the corona measures initiated in Brazil.

According to him, they cause significant damage to the economy. He often appeared in public without a mask and criticized measures to prevent the virus from spreading
