Sophisticated Cyberattack on International Criminal Court

The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague was hit by an ‘advanced’ cyber attack late last week. The attack is now under control, the court reports in a statement on its website. Two years ago, the court was also targeted by hackers.

The ICC was able to “rapidly detect, confirm and contain the attack,” it said. The ICC is still assessing the damage. “A court-wide impact assessment is being conducted. Measures are already being taken to mitigate the impact of the incident,” the ICC said.

Two years ago, the ICC was also targeted by hackers. They were then looking to spy on it. The court explicitly refers to the 2023 attack and calls the new incident ‘the second of this type’.

The ICC states that it considers it essential to inform the public about such incidents. At the same time, the court calls for continued support against such challenges. After all, the ICC is struggling with declining international support and, above all, with American sanctions. Because, among other things, American software suppliers are no longer allowed to serve the court as customers, it can, according to the court, hardly do its work.

The ICC does not establish a connection with the NATO summit that took place in The Hague last week. According to the Dutch Minister of Justice David van Weel, Russian-minded hackers attacked all kinds of websites around that summit.
