UN Chief Guterres Wants to Know From Putin What is Needed for Peace

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres speaks in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine.

 

Guterres’ office said in advance that the Portuguese would push for a quick peace agreement. The UN chief also speaks with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Guterres wants to know from Putin what it takes to bring about peace. A call by the UN chief to lay down arms during Orthodox Easter was not heeded in Russia and Ukraine.

On Monday, Guterres spoke with Turkish President Recep Erdogan about the war. Turkey has already indicated several times that it wants to mediate the conflict.

On Thursday, Guterres will travel to Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky. He also wants to hear what it takes to achieve peace.
