Wife of Notorious Drug Lord El Chapo to Plead Guilty
Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of infamous Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, is expected to plead guilty this week to charges alleging she helped her husband organize Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel. That reports The New York Times based on an insider.
She is expected to appear in court on Thursday. According to the paper, if she pleads guilty, that does not mean she is also obligated to disclose information about her husband’s allies, business associates or relatives.
Coronel, 31, was arrested last February when she arrived in the United States via Dulles International Airport, just outside Washington. Prosecutors also accuse Coronel of participating in two of her husband’s escape attempts from a Mexican prison in 2015 and 2016.
‘El Chapo’ is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted in February 2019 for trafficking large amounts of drugs and participating in multiple murder plots as the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, one of Mexico’s most violent drug organizations.
