Amazon Buys Developer of Self-Driving Cars Zoox

Amazon acquires the American developer of self-driving cars Zoox. The California company is working on an autonomous electric vehicle that is specifically intended for taxi services.

With the acquisition, Amazon may be betting on its own taxi service. Experts also take into account that the tech group wants to reduce the costs of delivering online purchases using Zoox technology.

The amount that the web store giant counts for Zoox has not been announced. Various media, including the Financial Times, speak of a takeover amount of more than $ 1 billion.

Zoox will continue to operate autonomously after the acquisition while retaining management. The company was founded in 2014 and had approximately 1,000 employees.

Zoox is one of the many start-ups active in the technology and software of self-driving vehicles. Amazon previously invested in Aurora, a competitor of Zoox.
