Last Day of Russian Referendum on Constitutional Change

Last Day of Russian Referendum on Constitutional Change

Russians can still vote on Wednesday in the referendum on the proposed constitutional change. This change will allow President Vladimir Putin to remain in power until 2036.

Putin proposed the constitutional amendment earlier this year. Although the upper and lower houses quickly agreed to the proposal, the president wanted to hear the opinion of the people.

This referendum could be voted on from June 25. Wednesday is the official last voting day, which is also a day off for many.

Putin recently said he is not sure if he will stay longer if the change is passed. Critics, such as opposition member Alexey Navalni, accuse Putin of wanting to rule for life. Putin has been in power since 1999.

The ballot box was scheduled for April 22, but was postponed due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

Measures have been taken in the polling stations to prevent people from lighting each other. For example, people have to keep their distance, and hand alcohol is present.
