Us and Taliban Negotiate Temporary Reduction of Violence
The United States and the Afghan Taliban have negotiated a seven-day reduction in violence. US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said this while visiting NATO in Brussels.
He also reported that both sides acknowledge that “the best and likely only solution for Afghanistan is a political one”.
According to Esper, there is progress in talks with the Taliban and more will be said about this, according to the minister. At the end of last year, the Americans started talking again with the Sunni extremists from Afghanistan.
Earlier in 2019, President Trump cut off the talks.
If based on the agreements made, the violence does indeed decrease sharply, and observers could lead to a peace agreement between the Taliban and the US.
Esper says he has told NATO allies that “there have been a series of productive meetings about how to proceed.”
