Biden Reverses Part of Trump’s Immigration Policy

On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden issued three presidential decrees reversing some of his predecessor Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies.

His spokesperson Jen Psaki tried to dampen expectations earlier in the day. “It won’t happen overnight,” she warned.

Among other things, Biden has ordered that the asylum procedure for refugees who have crossed the Mexican-American border be reviewed.

In addition, the new president has created a task force to reunite hundreds of migrant children and their parents who have been separated under the policies of the Trump administration. A third warrant provides aid to Central American countries and fighting corruption there to limit migration flows.

“We are going to work to undo the moral and national shame of the previous government, which literally, not figuratively, dragged children out of the arms of their families,” Biden said as he signed the decrees.

Biden previously announced a major reform of immigration policy that means that illegal migrants can have a chance of permanent residency in 5 years and become eligible for US citizenship after 8 years. Besides, Biden may still find Republicans in his path, who see little in the way of a more generous immigration policy.
