Six Dead in Shooting at Apartment Building in Canadian City of Vaughan
Six people, including the suspected shooter, have been killed in a shooting at an apartment building in the Canadian city of Vaughan. A seventh victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition but appeared to be surviving. So says the regional police.
The shooting happened Sunday evening at an apartment building in Vaughan, a city north of Toronto in Ontario. “When the police arrived, an interaction occurred between the officers and a male suspect. The suspect was shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene,” York Regional Police said in a statement.
At a press conference, Police Commissioner Jim MacSween said officers found “a horrific scene with several dead people” when they arrived. Emergency services searched the building to make sure there were no other victims.
Police are currently trying to determine the shooter’s motives and whether there is a connection between the victims and the suspect. He would have acted alone. The victims were also said to have been found in several flats in the building. “It will take us some time to determine what the motive was here and why this person did this,” MacSween said.
Canada is experiencing fewer mass shootings than the United States but is seeing an increase in such acts of violence. As a result, the authorities recently imposed a ban on small arms.
