German-Iranian Dissident Sentenced to Death in Tehran

In Iran, a German-Iranian dissident has been sentenced to death after a controversial trial. It concerns 67-year-old Jamshid Sharmahd, who, according to a court in Tehran, would be responsible, among other things, for a terrorist attack.

The justice portal Misan announced this on Tuesday. The verdict can still be appealed to the Supreme Court.

In August, Iran announced the arrest of Sharmahd, who was then in the United States, without saying where, how and when the man was arrested. In February 2022, Sharmahd appeared in court in Tehran on charges of involvement in an attack on a mosque in the Iranian city of Shiraz that killed 14 in April 2008.

Justice also accused him of establishing contacts with “FBI and CIA officials” and “attempting to establish contact with Israeli Mossad agents.”
