First Internet Statement in Nigeria: Man Gets Death Penalty

In Nigeria, a judge delivered judgment for the first time via the internet. The Lagos court sentenced a driver to death for the murder of his boss’s 76-year-old mother.

The various parties did not physically come to court this week due to the corona crisis.

The suspect, lawyers, witnesses and journalists participated in the Zoom program, which enables meetings via the internet.

The convicted driver, Olalekan Hameed, denied the charges. It is still unclear whether he will appeal. The governor of the state should also give the final green light to hang the man.

More than 2,800 coronavirus infections have been diagnosed so far in Nigeria. At least 93 patients died.
